Have you ever stood beside a pool or at a beach watching the water trying to build up the courage to jump in? Debating with yourself and procrastinating. Why not just jump without thinking?
This pic is me doing the sissy procrastinating thing, in the North of Scotland.
So. I got this note from a good friend back home in NZ… it is absolute GOLD (cheers JT!)
“One of the biggest excuses people have to not exercise is that they don’t have enough hours in the day…. sleep, breakfast, getting kids ready, work, dinner, getting kids to bed, tv, sleep. The reality – as you know – is that they do have enough time if they stopped using phones, tablets, computers and TV.
“My saying for exercising is “don’t think, just do”, meaning that we all get the can’t be f*cked some times but if you don’t give yourself a chance to ponder and just get your gear on and go…. you don’t have time to make excuses.”
So the quote within the quote is the gold I am focusing on today.
“DON’T THINK JUST DO”
Give us half a chance and we’ll think the sh*t out of anything. We will peer into the future and come up with all sorts of scenarios. With exercise we’ll most likely focus on the painful parts especially if we are lying in a nice super comfy warm bed next to our partner (who may even be naked).
We are future thinking machines. But apparently this messes us up when it comes to our ‘happiness’ because we are rubbish at predicting the future. *
This morning I was meant to be on the mountain bike with a friend, but I made excuses that it was raining and that I needed to work. IF I had put out my gear last night (made a decision) and not ruminated on the rain (which is a pathetic excuse) I would have gone and had fun. My life would have had a bit more goodness in it. But here I am in front of the screen grumpy, feeling fat and lethargic which will probably set me up for a less than perfect day.
nuf about my day… I’ve mentioned some tips in a post about how to GET OUT THE DOOR here.
(a day I did get out – despite being very hungover in Ibiza! Was it worth it? hell yes!)
How to get out the door:
PRIORITIES – is getting rid of your man boobs important to you? How important?
SCHEDULE – simply put it in the diary.
PREPARATION – get gear out the night before, then you have already made the decision.
REWARD – in the routine add in a nice flat white for after. It’s a penalty as well, no treat if you do not go.
INTERNAL TALK – it is positive, or none at all….. “don’t think, just do”.
When was the last time you regretted getting out the door to exercise?
Have a wicked day everyone.
* Check out Stumbling on Happiness by Dan Gilbert. What makes humans different from every other animal is that we think about the future. However, our brains fall victim to a wide range of biases that cause our predictions of the future (and our memories of the past) to be inaccurate. Because of these mental errors it is remarkably difficult to predict what will make us feel happy.
